We were tasked by the National Trust to create an installation that was both engaging and functional – something that reflected the look and feel of the viaduct while encouraging participation. Inspired by the nostalgic charm of vintage coin drops, we developed an interactive marble run to introduce playfulness and movement into the act of donating. The result shows how a small moment of interaction can deepen visitor connection and support for a cause.

Since its installation, donations have increased by 200% compared to the previous year. Beyond encouraging contributions, it has become a popular feature of the space, helping the Trust connect more visitors with the story behind the viaduct.

The design reflects the site’s industrial heritage and was developed entirely in-house, from concept to installation. We combined digital and physical prototyping, including 3D simulation software and hands-on testing, drawing inspiration from vintage coin drops and kinetic exhibits at the MAD Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The mechanism features a custom spiral lift and drop route, activated by a visitor’s tap. The donation hardware sends a signal to our microcontroller-based system, where custom code triggers a motor to release a marble into the run – turning a simple tap into a memorable, tactile experience.

Our hand-drawn illustrated backdrop shows the Manchester skyline, viaduct architecture, native plants, and the Manchester Bee. The marble run is encased in clear polycarbonate and mounted on a bespoke joinery stand housing all electronic and mechanical components. The exterior is branded with artwork developed for the viaduct by Creative Concern. We fabricated and installed the system on site, ensuring it delivered on the National Trust’s goals for this unique urban green space.
